# Is Ethereum More Private Than Bitcoin?

Ethereum is not more private than Bitcoin by default. Both networks record transactions on public blockchains, and neither automatically hides your wallet activity.

The main difference is how each network organizes transactions. Ethereum commonly keeps activity connected to one account, while Bitcoin wallets can generate a new address for each payment. This can give Bitcoin users more separation between transactions, although blockchain analysis can still connect them.

## How Bitcoin Privacy Works

For example, paying a retailer from your main Ethereum wallet could allow the recipient to inspect the wallet's current ETH balance, token holdings, previous transfers, and contract activity.

## Which One Provides Better Privacy?

Neither Bitcoin nor Ethereum provides strong privacy by default.

Bitcoin can offer better separation between individual payments when a wallet creates fresh addresses and manages UTXOs carefully. However, those addresses may still be connected through transaction patterns and exchange records.

Ethereum often makes account activity easier to review because the same address may be used repeatedly for payments, tokens, NFTs, and applications. Ethereum is described in its documentation as public by design, with addresses, balances, transactions, contract calls, and events visible to block explorers.

## The practical comparison is:

Bitcoin: New addresses can separate payments, but transaction analysis may reconnect them.

Ethereum: Activity is often concentrated under one reusable account, which can reveal a wider onchain history.

Both: A wallet can become connected to your identity through exchanges, retailers, account information, or public posts.

Ethereum has privacy-focused applications and proposed standards, including zero-knowledge systems and stealth-address designs. These are additional tools rather than privacy provided by ordinary ETH transactions.
